Acoma

Acoma Pueblo is popularly known as Sky City. It received this name by being perched atop a 70-acre sandstone mesa rising 367 feet above the valley floor. This was a strategic defense used by the Acomans against raiders. Spanish conquerors learned the hard way of this defensive stronghold when they entered New Mexico in the 16th century. Although fewer than 50 Acomans live in Sky City year-round today with the rest living in nearby villages, Acoma continues to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Throughout the year the Acomans gather on the sandstone mesa top to observe their cultural calendar.
